Fire Fighting

Each year, fires destroy lives and property. Fire fighters help protect people and property by rapidly responding to each emergency. Fire fighting is the act of put out a fire. There are 2 rules of fire fighting: Do not harm yourself and do not harm others in the process of extinguishing a fire. Thus firefighting includes public education, research & development of methods and professional standards including safe building design, and inspection work.

When called to a fire, the fire fighting team analzyes the fire, creates a safe plan and then attacks the fire. This is followed by possible safety rescue and then stopping sources of heat that could reignite the fire.

Fire fighters are normally the first responders on the set of a fire since they are the first ones usually called. This is beacause it is easy to fight a fire when it is in its beginning stages. And as we all know, fires grow and spread extremely fast.

The first step in fire fighting is to determine the source of the fire, spot the risks and determine any casualities. It is important to shut off all gas and electrical sources and remove combustible materials from the path of the fire. The main fire fighting method used by fire fighters is the use of water. Water works in two ways. First, it vaporizes when it comes in contact with the water. This vapor then diplaces the oxygen and the fire will then die out because it doesn’t have enough combustion to continue. The second is the water vapors absorb the heat, cools the smoke that could act as further fuel.

In conclusion, fire fighting has severa basic skills: prevention, self preservation, rescue, preservation of property and fire control. Firefighting is further broken down into skills which include size-up, extinguishment, ventilation, and salvage and overhaul.
